What Is SAWI?
The South Asian Wedding Institute (SAWI) is a specialized educational program created to help wedding professionals understand the traditions, ceremonies, etiquette, and cultural significance behind South Asian weddings.
South Asian celebrations often include multi-day events, large family participation, elaborate ceremonies, and traditions that have been preserved for generations. These weddings may include Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Persian cultural influences, each with unique customs and ceremonial moments.
As destination wedding locations such as Cartagena, Medellín, and Bogotá continue to attract international couples from around the world, understanding these traditions becomes increasingly important for wedding professionals. Through the SAWI certification, I gained a deeper understanding of the cultural elements that make these celebrations so meaningful and how to document them with authenticity and respect.
What I Learned During the Certification

One of the most valuable aspects of the SAWI certification was learning about the diversity within South Asian wedding celebrations. While these weddings are often grouped under a single category, each culture, religion, and family tradition brings unique ceremonies, symbolism, and expectations.
The program explored the structure and significance of Hindu weddings, Muslim weddings, Sikh weddings, and Persian wedding traditions. From multi-day celebrations and ceremonial attire to family roles and sacred rituals, the training provided practical knowledge that helps wedding professionals better serve couples from diverse backgrounds.
As a photographer, this education allows me to anticipate important moments, understand their significance, and create images that preserve not only the beauty of the celebration but also its cultural heritage.
Why Cultural Knowledge Matters in Wedding Photography

Photographing a wedding involves much more than documenting events as they unfold. It requires understanding the meaning behind the moments being captured.
South Asian weddings often include ceremonies and traditions that may be unfamiliar to photographers without specialized experience. Missing a key ritual or misunderstanding its significance can mean missing some of the most important moments of the entire celebration.

Whether documenting a Sikh Anand Karaj ceremony, a Muslim Nikah, a Hindu wedding ritual, or a Persian Sofreh Aghd, cultural awareness helps ensure that every meaningful detail is photographed with intention and respect.

This understanding becomes especially valuable in destination wedding locations such as Cartagena, where couples frequently bring together family members and traditions from different countries and cultures.
My SAWI Certification

I completed the SAWI certification as part of my ongoing commitment to serving international and multicultural couples with the highest level of professionalism and cultural awareness.
Throughout my career, I have photographed weddings involving different traditions, backgrounds, and family dynamics. This training further expanded my understanding of South Asian wedding customs and reinforced the importance of continuous education within the wedding industry.
As destination wedding locations such as Cartagena, Medellín, and Bogotá continue to welcome couples from around the world, I believe that cultural understanding is essential for creating meaningful and authentic wedding photography.
Photographing South Asian and Multicultural Weddings
Colombia has become one of the most attractive destination wedding locations in Latin America, welcoming couples from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia.
Cartagena, in particular, offers a unique combination of historic architecture, luxury venues, tropical scenery, and world-class hospitality, making it an exceptional location for South Asian destination weddings. Medellín and Bogotá also provide outstanding options for couples seeking modern venues, cultural experiences, and personalized celebrations.
Whether planning a Hindu wedding, Muslim wedding, Sikh wedding, Persian wedding, or a multicultural celebration that blends traditions from different backgrounds, my goal is always to document the story with authenticity, attention to detail, and respect for the cultural significance of every moment.
The knowledge gained through SAWI allows me to approach these celebrations with greater confidence and understanding, ensuring that every tradition, ceremony, and family connection is preserved through meaningful and timeless imagery.
